Turning Food into Art

Turning Food into Art

We ran into Chef Ray L. Duey at the Multicultural Festival in Elk GrovGrove, California this past weekend and spent several minutes at the Kaiser-Permanente booth mesmerized by his artwork with fruits and vegetables.

Chef Ray, of Lodi, Calif., has won awards for his work, been to the White House, and competed on the Food Network. Yet, on Saturday, he shared his work with kids, giving one child a hummingbird and another a flower. For me, he put down his carving knife, stepped from behind his work table, and gave me editing tips on my cell phone’s camera. I spent hours today practicing his editing tips while my husband cut our cantaloupe in the kitchen (into cubes, alas, not flowers and birds).

Here’s a video of Chef Ray teaching a group of Hawaiian culinary students not only how to carve, but some cool ways to live.
